Voting by Internet vulnerable

The Dutch internet magazine Netkwesties brings a story today about the vulnerability of voting by internet. Some 40% of the Dutch who are living abroad have given preference to vote online. This makes the group who wishes to vote by internet the largest of the groups that are voting from overseas. Slightly less people vote by letter and the remaining 20% use proxy vote or the voters - card.

Amongst the dangers are a DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service) - attack, hacking and spoofing. In simple words: site overload, unauthorized access to the site and wrongful communication on behalf of the voting authority.

The article (in Dutch) introduces criticism on the choice for CMGLogica as developpers of the facilities. Netkwesties links to opinion makers on this topic, including a website from Peter Knoppers, who makes a strong case not to use any form of voting machines. His site includes links to other opinions, also in mainly in Dutch.
