Discussion on E-Democracy
A new comment just came in from my good friend Peter Wierenga. In his contribution he is also referring to an article in Dutch that I found to be interesting in De Groene. He is as oposed to e-democracy as anybody could ever be. Unfortunately he explaines his fury in Dutch but it is well worth reading for those who can:
Het lot is je niet gunstig gezind: de Sdu blokkeert mij de toegang tot je nieuwe weblog. Inmiddels heb ik wel (...) een Amerikaanse weblog bezocht. Omdat ik je hoog heb zitten, zal ik je niet sparen!
Om met het weblog te beginnen: ik was niet erg onder de indruk. Ik kan me voorstellen dat het handig is voor wie interesse in dat betreffende vakgebied heeft, maar zelfs dan blijf ik met een beetje naar gevoel zitten. Wat ik mis is een soort van tegengeluid, want veel stukken hebben een hoog halleluja-gehalte. De anonieme commentaren van bezoekers interesseren me niet, nee, wat ik zoek is een soort bril om alles wat de 'professionals' beweren in perspectief te plaatsen. Daarom vond ik het stuk in De Groene een stuk interessanter, omdat daar door de journalist zelf al wat tegengas geboden wordt. Maar het artikel bevestigt desondanks mijn eerdere mening, en dat is dat ik niet geloof in e-democratie.
(...) maar ik voel me dan ook meer een aristocraat, en geloof dus niet in directe democratie. Ik geef de voorkeur aan een representatieve democratie: we kunnen de complexe problemen niet in hapklare brokjes aan het volk serveren. Dat de politiek onder paars (maar ook daarvoor al) te technocratisch geworden is, bestrijd ik niet. Maar volgens mij komt dat niet door te weinig interactie, maar met de voor een groot deel achterhaalde ideologieën van de politieke partijen. Wel bespeur ik een positieve tendens. Het debat is eindelijk weer een beetje terug, en ik hecht eraan dat het in een gemeenschap gevoerd wordt die enigszins overzichtelijk is. Bijvoorbeeld in een nationale krant, ja. Liever nog in een Europese krant. (...)

PS - Al dat jargon irriteert me ook mateloos: weblogs, bloggen, smartmobs... Dat Internetgoeroes een grote toekomst voorzien hiervoor, so what? De vraag is niet of iets succes heeft, maar of jij het een goede zaak vindt dat iets succes heeft!

ON AIDS and AFRICA:
Having lived in Ghana for the past 3 years, I still try to keep track every now and then about what is going on. I was struck by the words of the President of the National House of Chiefs. He argues that condoms were meant for adults who could not control their sexual desires and he deplored the mass promotion of condom use.
In suggesting a solution for the growing threat he urged colleague chiefs to carry the message across to the grassroots and encourage the youth to adopt abstinence as the best antidote to AIDS. Find the details at the best Ghana news site.
This opinion, By the way, is not the general opinion in Ghana. I also read that Hotels in the country would soon be compelled by as a matter of government policy to put condoms in their bedrooms. Read the details about that here.
It proves to me that Ghana still has some cultural challenges to overcome. And it might not easy to do just that.

Here is an interview in Dutch with an American Professor, Benjamin Barber (University of Maryland) that I found to be interesting. He is opposing the Bush administration and their war on terror with strong arguments. We can't be hearing enough of that, can we?
Well, of course it doesn't take long to find English information with similar content. I found an article that was published in the LA Times. Where else than on his own website would I need to look?
